Obituary for Vincenzo Paterno

Vincenzo Paterno
Vincenzo Paterno, 92, of Park Avenue, Westerly, passed away unexpectedly at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband for 68 years of Annunziata (Tenuta) Paterno.

Born in Acri, Italy, he was a son of the late Franceso and Cristina Paterno.

Vincenzo immigrated from Acri in 1969. A communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, he worked as a stonemason, landscaper and laborer for Connecticut Local No. 547. His true passion in life, however, was vegetable gardening and he brought back a little piece of Calabria to Westerly which was evident to all who walked by. He was a true artist and the garden was his canvas. His garden boasted two of the largest fig trees in town which he eagerly shared with all. He loved to sing, make wine, read and keep in touch with friends around the world with heartfelt, handwritten letters. He also shared his hearty joy of life and Italian traditions with everyone he met.

In addition to his devoted wife Annunziata, he will be dearly missed by his two sons, Franco Paterno and wife Stacy of Barrington and Paul Paterno and his wife Jo-Ellen of Warwick; two daughters, Santina Guani and husband Filippo of Longwood, FL and Maria Gillespie and husband Steven of Manchester, MA; and son-in-law Antonio Straface of Acri, Italy. Mr. Paterno is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Ines, Paola, Alessandro, Kristiana, Nico, Daniela, Lorenzo, Gianfranco, Antonio, Sofia, Lucy and Rose; as well as three great grandchildren, Luigi, Cristiana and Eleonora. He was predeceased by his daughter Cristina Straface; and three siblings, Angelo Paterno, Annina Azzinari and Rosa Gaccione.

A visiting hour will be held at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St. Westerly on Friday from 8:30-9:30am, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10am at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St. Westerly. Burial will follow at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com
