Obituary for Peter J. Young

Peter J. Young, beloved husband for 54 years of Andra (Pearce) Young, of 2590 Gold Star Hwy #320, Mystic, CT and formerly of William St., Pawcatuck, passed away at his home in Mystic on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the age of 79.

Born in Whitinsville, MA, he was a son of the late Peter and Margaret Young.

After graduating from Northbridge High School, Pete entered the military where he served in the US Army during the Korean War. Upon return, he graduated from American International College and Eastern Connecticut State College where he received his Master’s Degree. Pete then earned a Sixth Year Degree from Southern Connecticut State College.

Mr. Young (affectionately known as Pistol) taught at Stonington High School for more than 35 years until his retirement in 1995. He was also a lifeguard and swim instructor at Stonington Point and enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Elmridge Golf Course. Pete was a founding member and chairman of the Stonington Recreation Commission and was heavily involved as a volunteer for a number of community organizations. He coached football, girls’ basketball and golf at SHS and was a Hall of Fame Athlete and Coach.

In addition to his wife, he will be dearly missed by his four children, Lori Skelton of East Lyme; Michael Young and wife Kathy of Southington; James Young of Norwich; and Debra Srdoc and husband Dana of Highlands Ranch, CO. Pete also leaves behind a sister, Elizabeth Feen of Whitinsville, MA, and was a loving grandfather of seven grandchildren, Rachel and Zachary Skelton, Caitlin and Sean Young, and Andie, Desmond and Danielle Srdoc. He had many cherished nieces and nephews. Pete was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Kosciak and three brothers, Raymond, Paul and John Young. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, as well as a coach and friend to many.

Visiting hours are omitted. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Liturgy on Saturday at 11am in St. Mary’s Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. There will be a gathering of family and friends following the Liturgy. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Martin House, P.O.
