Obituary for James J. Ventry

James J. Ventry, 80, of Bradford Road, Bradford, passed away at his home on Thursday, February 2, 2017.

Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late James and Bombina Ventry. He was a graduate of Westerly High School, Class of 1954, where he earned a varsity letter in baseball.

Mr. Ventry was employed by the Westerly Sun and the Bradford Dyeing Association. He was also a Lieutenant of Guards at Mystic Seaport for many years until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army for three years. As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, he engaged in patrols on the East German and Czechoslovak borders in 1958 and 1959.

From 1967 to 1976, Mr. Ventry was an avid surfer and traveled extensively along the East Coast, from Maine to Florida. Known as the “Wild Man of the Surf,” he won numerous trophies in the Men’s Senior Division and was well known across the United States for his abilities. Mr. Ventry was also a frequent contributor to International Surfing magazine.

After he retired, he was a supporter of many Roman Catholic organizations. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Bradford.

He leaves a sister Angelina T. Ponichtera of Wyoming and two nephews, Mr. Stanley J. Ponichtera of Wyoming and Dr. Robert M. Ponichtera of Alexandria, VA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 7 Church Street, Bradford on Tuesday at 10 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be private.
