Pawcatuck – Joseph Thomas Marie died peacefully on November 7, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in the Stonington Borough to the late Charles and Mary Marie. Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Dorothy (Soucy) Marie and children, Judith M. Marie, of Brookline, MA; Thomas (Barbara) Marie of Medfield, MA and Patricia (Thomas) Naslund of Pawcatuck, CT; grandchildren, Joseph, Matthew, Michael and Charles Marie and Connor Naslund; his sister Anna Teresa (Tesa) Downs; his sisters-in-law, Florence Marie and Elizabeth Lawton and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Francis Marie and his sisters Margie Marie, Katherine Gilbert and Alice Cedio.

A graduate of Stonington High School and a US Navy veteran who proudly served on the USS Midway during World War II, Joe was employed at Davis-Standard and retired from Wyman Gordon (formerly Arwood). An active supporter of numerous community organizations, he was an honorary member of the Stonington Borough Fire Department, past commander of the American Legion Post #58 and president of the Connecticut Lung Association - New London Chapter. Joe was also a member of the Neptune Fire Department, Stonington Ambulance Corps and Knights of Columbus. Happy to represent Stonington’s “old-timers,” he gladly contributed to the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame and various historical presentations about the Borough. In 2014, he visited Washington, DC along with other area WWII veterans on an Honor Flight with the RI Fire Chiefs Honor Flight Network.

After retiring, Joe and his wife enjoyed traveling in the US and abroad. He was especially passionate about UCONN Women’s Basketball and the ocean, cherishing summers with his many dear friends at Watch Hill Beach. Always a family man, his fondest times were those spent with his wife, children and grandsons.
