Obituary for Norman A. "Stormy" Mitchell

Norman Avery Mitchell ‘Stormy’ of Ashaway, RI, beloved husband of Phyllis Mitchell for 53 years, passed away in his home on Sunday, January 27 at the age of 73 surrounded by family and friends. Norman valiantly battled pancreatic cancer for over four and a half years.

Norman was born in CT the oldest son of Louis A. & Corinne (Rackett) Mitchell. He married the love of his life, Phyllis (Daglieri) Mitchell on June 10, 1965.

Norman leaves behind his four children and their spouses: Ron & Caryn Mitchell of Ashaway, RI, Tina and Bob Evans of North Stonington, CT, Renee & Michael Bing of Virginia Beach, VA and Tammy & Tony Turano of Hopkinton, RI. Norman was the proud grandfather of Kayla Evans, Zachary Hudson, Tory Turano, Ian Mitchell, Alyssa Bing and Nathan Mitchell. Norman also leaves behind his siblings, Bill Mitchell of Mystic, CT, Diane Mitchell of Groton, CT and Rose Weber of Mystic, CT. He was predeceased by his sisters, Claire Mitchell and Sandra Hall as well as his brother Louis Mitchell. Norman also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and other extended or honorary family members.

Norman was a longtime employee of the Kellem’s Division of Harvey Hubbell in Stonington before leaving to work with his son’s construction company, Ron Mitchell Construction.

Norman enjoyed listening to country music, especially when it was performed live by Nick Bosse. He was able to travel to Nashville, TN and visit the home of country music. Norman was an avid bowler before his illness and passed that love on to his grandchildren. He was a well-known fixture at Alley Katz in Westerly, RI whether he was bowling himself or watching his grandsons. Known to many as ‘Stormy’, he will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor.

No services will be held. A Celebration of Life will be planned for the spring/summer.
