Obituary for Mary E. Gardella

Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) Gardella, 91, passed away at the Westerly Hospital on November 10, 2020. Devoted wife for 64 years to the late Michael (Mike) Anthony Gardella, who passed away May 12, 2019, and a loving mother to Shelley, Michael, and Jean
.
Born in Providence, RI, on July 1, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Taylor and Bernice Holmes. She is survived by her three children, Shelley Gardella, Michael Gardella, and Jean (Gardella) Becht, and a sister, Marion Beaudreau, as well as several nieces and nephews
.
Growing up, Mary, affectionately known as “Betty”, spent much of her time with her cousins at the Main Farm in Pawcatuck, CT. After graduating from Westerly High school, she moved to Albany, NY to be a nanny for 2 children. She then returned to Westerly and married her high school sweetheart. Betty and Mike married August 20, 1955. Betty worked at George C. Moore Company, then became a stay at home mom for her children. When their children were old enough, Betty worked at Sunrise Meat Market along with her best friend, Dodi Lallo, until she retired. She loved to cook. Customers would travel far and wide to bring home one of Betty’s featured daily specials.

Betty loved spending time at the beach, playing sports and doing sewing projects. Together, Betty and Mike planned and harvested a garden every year. Fresh vegetables, homemade tomato sauce and so many other garden specialties garnished the table throughout the year. And let’s not forget the soupy.

Betty and Mike loved to square dance and were devoted members of the Surfside 8 square dance club for over 50 years. They made many good friends, traveled, and had a lot of fun.

Betty remained close to her family, especially Frank (Ray) Robinson and Evelyn Bratton. Betty and Mike, along with Ray, Evelyn, spouses and children spent many summers at the “lake”, swimming, picking blueberries, 4th of July celebrations, softball games and many other family gatherings. Betty also looked forward to her entire family getting together for the yearly pig roast at the Main Farm.

Memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Betty…….A mother and friend that will be greatly missed.
