Obituary for Gerard J. "Jerry" Nardone

Gerard J. Nardone, age 92 of Westerly RI, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2020. A native of Westerly, RI, he was born to the late John and Jesse (Raffo)Nardone. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine Ferreira whom he married in 1951 as well as his two sisters, Marie Ames and Marguerite Sullivan. He is survived by his 3 children, Jacinta Nardone of Westerly, RI, John Nardone and wife Susan of Stoneham, MA, and Gina Sutcliffe and husband Tom of Richmond, RI; brother-in-law John Ferreira and wife Susan of Westerly RI; 4 grandchildren Erik Nardone, Emily Sylvia, Dana and Christopher Sutcliffe and one great grandson Edward “James” Sylvia III.

Gerard joined the Army shortly after the Korean War and served 18 months, primarily in Japan, working in the Vehicle Repair group. Upon his return, he worked with his father’s plastering business, John Nardone and Son, until the introduction of sheetrock caused a decline in business. He later worked for General Dynamics, eventually retiring from Pfizer in Groton, CT in 1990. He was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers (Local 3-M), Elks Lodge 678, and the Westerly Track Club from which he earned many awards as a master runner. Gerard found great happiness in spending time with his family and friends. While most knew him as Jerry, he was lovingly nicknamed “Deeds” during his time in the military as he was always ready to lend a helping hand. As a true Westerly Italian, Gerard never passed up the opportunity to indulge in a cold Sam Adams, a glass of red wine, and soupy. He will be missed and remembered fondly by many.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 9th, at 12 noon at St. Clare Church, 62 Crandall Avenue, Misquamicut, RI. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, seating capacity limits will be in place. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a food donation in Gerard’s memory to United Way of Rhode Island or The Johnnycake Center of Westerly this holiday season.
