Obituary for John Garofalo

John Garofalo, Sr. of Westerly, Rhode Island, passed away on January 23rd, 2022.
He was the son of the late Gaetano and Sebastiana Garofalo. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Gloria J. LoPresto Garofalo, and is survived by a son, John Garofalo, Jr. of Vancouver, WA; a daughter, Constance Andrews of Magalia, CA; brother-in-law Donald LoPresto of Pawcatuck; and a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Constance Cleary of Waterford, CT, Anne Oslund of Misquamicut and Jill White of Phillipsburg, NJ; and brothers, Joseph Garofalo of East Dover, VT and Arthur G. Garofalo of Westerly.

John was born in Middletown, CT and at the age of 2 years, moved to Westerly when his father was employed at the George C. Moore Company. He grew up attending the local schools starting at the Pleasant Street School, the High Street School, the Babcock Junior High School and the old Westerly High School located next to the Westerly Public Library in the park. He graduated from high school in June of 1937, the last class to do so.

John was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal. He was a civilian employee of the Navy, having served at the Overhaul and Repair Department at the Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, RI, the Naval Air Supply Office, Philadelphia, PA, and the Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters, Washington, DC where in the latter assignment, he served as the program manager of the fleet of the President’s helicopters during the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon presidencies.
After retiring from the Naval Air Systems Command, John served a period of employment at the Grumman Aerospace Corp. Engineering Dept., Bethpage, Long Island, NY before final retirement and return to Westerly, home.
