Obituary for John Joseph Flaherty Jr.
John Joseph (Jack) Flaherty, Jr., 81, beloved husband for 52 years of Karen (Reay) Flaherty, of Somerset Drive, Pawcatuck, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Monday, January 31, 2022.
Born in New London, CT, he was the son of the late Nora and John J. Flaherty, Sr.
Jack was a graduate of Buckley High in New London and Providence College (1963) where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics.
He served in the Army Reserves and was a communicant of St. Michael Church. He was a talented baseball and basketball player and rabid NY Yankees, NY Giants and NY Knicks fan. Jack also loved to golf and there are a few trees that may still have one or two of his clubs. Jack also coached Hemco Little League in New London and multiple teams through Pawcatuck Little League. Jack was best known for his razor-sharp wit.
Always ready to give or get a good laugh. He was a man of high integrity and ideals. He loved his family and he loved his country. He routinely expressed his good fortune at both.
Jack was employed at Electric Boat for 20 years and as an Insurance Agent for Met Life for many years until his retirement.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Karen; three children, John M. Flaherty (Marianne Voss) of Stonington, Julie Fassbender (Jeff) of Silverdale, WA and Jennifer Whipple (Jason) of Pawcatuck; a sister Mary Zita Smith of New London; five grandchildren, Kaitlyn Whipple, Kyle Whipple, John J. Flaherty III, Maya Flaherty and Noelle Marie Fassbender; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by three siblings, Joan Johanson, Ann Burns, and Robert Flaherty.
Visiting hours are omitted. A Requiem Mass will take place at St. Michael’s Church, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 10 am. Burial is private.
