Obituary for M. Claire Mackay

Claire Mackay of Westerly, RI died peacefully on Friday, May 6, 2022. She was 94. Born in Westerly, she was the daughter of the late John and Veronica (Lynch) Mackay. Claire graduated from Immaculate Conception School and Westerly High School. She worked as a secretary at The Moore Company, from which she retired after many years of service.

Claire loved to travel. She especially cherished the memories of family trips to Ireland. A voracious reader, Claire was never without a book and was a firm believer in the old adage, “If you like to read you will never be lonely.” Her day was never complete without the challenge of a NY Times crossword puzzle. Her sharp wit and infectious laughter will be missed.

Claire is survived by her sister Patricia Mackay, with whom she made her home; her brother Jim and sister-in-law Marion Mackay; and many nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her sister Kathleen; her brothers, Jack and Bob; and by her dear friend Phil LaMarche.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers at The Westerly Health Center for the love and kindness they showed to Claire.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Church, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck on Friday, May 13th at 10AM. The burial will be private. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Claire’s memory may be made to the Westerly Library and are deeply appreciated.
