Obituary for Richard A. "Andy" Gross

Richard A. “Andy” Gross, beloved husband for 54 years to Janet (Calamore) Gross, of Pawcatuck, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the age of 79.

Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Andrew C. and Adele Gross.

Andy’s banking career spanned over 40 years and he retired as a Vice President of Chelsea Groton Bank. He took great pride in saying “My handshake is my word.”

He was a member of the Natl. Amputee Golf Association, the Westerly BPOE #678, the Rotary Club, Yes for SHS Building Committee, Chairman of the local Waterfront Commission, and ran for Stonington Town Treasurer.

Andy was the first banker to give loans to commercial fishermen and was proud of being a plank owner. He was co-founder and member of the Stonington Anglers Association where he was instrumental in creating the Fisherman’s Memorial at the Stonington Town Dock. He was also a life member of the Calabrese Club.

He loved fishing, hunting, golfing and telling stories.

In addition to his wife Janet, he leaves his son Erik J. Gross and wife Catherine of Columbia, CT; two sisters, Judith Valenti of West Hartford, CT and Nancy Salesky and husband J. Dennis of Sebring, Fla; three grandchildren, Nathan and James Gross of Columbia, CT and Milo Gross in England along with his daughter-in-law Khadija Khan of Hastings, England; and nephew David J. Valenti (Christy). Andy was predeceased by his son Bradford C. Gross.
