Obituary for Elizabeth D. Farley (Downey)

Elizabeth (Downey) Farley, 90, beloved wife for 68 years of John B. Farley Jr. of Charlestown, RI and Manchester, CT passed away at her home in Quonochontaug on Friday, October 21, 2022.

Born in Marlboro, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Marion Downey. A graduate of St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, she met John in Washington, DC in 1953 when they both were attending the Eisenhower inauguration. She taught school in Marlboro, MA, Andover, CT and Manchester, CT. She and John raised their family in Manchester and built a cottage in Quonochontaug, which became the heart and center of family activity. They retired to Quonochontaug in 2009. Elizabeth enjoyed Sunday hikes and climbed Mt. Washington several times. An avid reader, she also loved gardening and travel. Elizabeth lived her life devoted to her family and faith.

In addition to her husband John, she will be dearly missed by her five children: Anne Sargent and husband Bruce of Murrells Inlet, SC; Ellen Melko of Moyock, NC; John B. Farley III and fiancée Nancy Sinchak of Bloomfield, CT; Mary Todesca and husband James of Savannah, GA and Margaret Ring and husband Bill of Lake Geneva, WI. Her ten grandchildren, whom she loved and prayed for every day, will miss her very much: Neil Sargent; Brian, Sean, Owen and Michael Farley; Danny and Meg Todesca; Jimmy, Moira and Brendan Ring. Elizabeth also leaves her sister Joan McManus of Westfield, MA; daughter-in-law Claudia Triggs, and several well-loved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother William J. Downey, Jr. and her son-in-law Jay Melko.

Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly on Saturday at 10 am. There is no procession from the funeral home to church. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck. The family requests donations in Elizabeth’s memory to the Johnny Cake Center of Westerly, 23 Industrial Dr., Westerly, RI 02891.
