Obituary for William Joseph Quirk

William Joseph  Quirk
William Joseph Quirk, 84, of Westerly, passed away on August 11, 2010 at Apple Rehab. Westerly. He was the husband of the late Anne (Carstairs) Quirk.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late James and Bridget (Conlon) Quirk.
A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Fireman First Class in 1946, and awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal for his service in China.
In 1948, he graduated from LaSalle Academy in Providence, and he received his B.S. in Agriculture from U.R.I. in 1952.
Mr. Quirk was formerly employed as a Vice President at McGraw-Hill in New York City and of Suffolk County on Long Island. A resident of Smithtown, NY, for forty years, he retired to South Chatham, MA, where he enjoyed walking on the beach and woodworking.
He was a communicant of St. Clare Church, in Westerly. He adored his wife Anne and spending time with his family, especially his nine loving grandchildren: Kimberly, Brian, Billy, Duncan, Shawn, Jacqueline, Paige, Ashley and Zachary. He was also an avid college football fan.
In addition to his grandchildren he leaves four sons and their spouses: William A. and Lorraine Quirk of Westerly, Brian J. and Linda Quirk of West Hartford, CT, Kevin M. and Melissa Quirk of North Attleboro, MA and Shawn C. Quirk of Breckenridge, CO; a brother James P. Quirk, Esq. of Warwick; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers Robert and John Quirk.
Calling hours will be held Monday, August 16, 2010, from 4 to 7p.m. in the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly, RI. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at 9:30a.m. in St. Clare Church, Crandall Avenue, Westerly, RI. There is no procession from the funeral home to the church. Burial with Military Honors will be in RI Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI 02822.
