Obituary for Giuseppina Mastrandrea (Zinna)
Giuseppina (Zinna) Mastrandrea, 89, of Grove Avenue, Westerly, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 21, 2023. She was the wife of the late Joseph Mastrandrea.
Giuseppina was born in Catania, Sicily, Italy to the late Vicenza (Franzone) and Felippo Zinna.
Giuseppina, as a child in Sicily during WWII, by the grace of God, survived a hand grenade explosion that almost severed her leg, but was saved through the daily efforts of her dear mother, Vicenza, and an American Army doctor. She was the co-owner, along with her beloved husband, of the Hotel Savoy in Westerly and an accomplished seamstress. She was known for her exquisite meals, being a devoted wife, outstanding mother and grandmother to her four children and seven grandchildren, and a loyal friend to all. She was always willing to offer a helping hand. She enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, and loved playing with her pet dogs.
She will be dearly missed by her four children, Maria Rosa A. Gilfert and husband Thomas, John A. Mastrandrea and wife Lisa, and Enza C. Mastrandrea, all of Westerly, and Joseph A. Mastrandrea and wife Jane of Rochester, NY; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Giuseppina was predeceased by four brothers, Umberto, Giuseppe, Angelo and Vito Zinna, and one sister Tina Paonessa.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 26 from 4-7p.m. at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Chrisian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly at 10am on Saturday, May 27. There is no procession to church from the funeral home.
