Mark Jeffrey Lamkins, 65, passed away peacefully in his home on September 8, 2023, surrounded by his loving family in Coventry, RI. Mark was born in Orange, California. He was raised on a small ranch in Norco, California where he with his 5 siblings learned to care for livestock and ride horses. He was fearless, learning on his own how to ride standing up on a bareback galloping horse, flipping off as it came to a stop, shouting “Ta-da!” Regular summer trips to Sunset Beach instilled a lifelong love of the ocean and surfing.
He served in the US Air Force in Nevada in the late 1970s.
Mark moved back to the east coast in the 1980s to be closer to his parents where he settled in Rhode Island, married, and raised a family.
If you were to ask Mark what he did for a living, there was rarely just one answer. He spent many years “dropping” lines for cable companies, but he was also an accomplished carpenter and all-around handyman. He was a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant and enjoyed caring for and getting to know his clients for Lifetime Medical in Providence, RI. Later in life he trained and graduated at the top of his class as a Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Aviation Technician, a career he eschewed to take care of his ailing mom until she passed in 2021. He considered it a privilege to honor his mom’s wish to live with family.
Mark, time permitting, would always be there to help his family and friends. Whether flying around the-country to help a family member move, or install accessibility equipment for his sister’s ailing husband, or help a friend install drywall, or help his son build a fence, Mark did not hesitate to go.
Mark knew how to play too. Whether surfing with his kids, hanging out with friends and family on the lake, hosting his annual 4th of July party or spontaneous trips with Myra, he was all-in. They just recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica.
Mark loved music, gravitating towards the nearest available guitar to play and sing some favorite Jimmy Buffett song.
Mark is preceded in death by his father, George Albert Lamkins, his mother Elynor Cynthia (Mullaney) Lamkins and his daughter, Megan Cynthia Lamkins. He is survived by his wife Myra (Bliven) Lamkins; his children, Mark and Kristen Lamkins; his sisters, Bonnie Jean Francois, Jennifer Lamkins, and Colleen Rainone; his brothers Brian and Perry Lamkins, and his grandson, George David Lamkins, along with many nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High Street, Westerly, Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 10 a.m. Burial is private.
