John Ferreira, 78, of Sesame Street, Westerly, passed away on November 29, 2023 at the Westerly Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Susan (LeBlanc) Ferreira. They were married on November 24,1981 in Niantic, CT.
Born in Westerly, John Ferreira was the son of the late Antonio and Philomena Ferreira.
John attended Immaculate Conception School in Westerly, graduating in 1960. He graduated high school from LaSalle Academy in Providence in 1963, taking the train and then a bus to school every day.
He proudly served 6 years in the Rhode Island Army National Guard from 1966-1972 and was honorably discharged as a Platoon Sergeant.
John was employed at Electric Boat in Groton, CT for 44 years, working mostly on the NR-1 Project, before retiring in 2010.
John was a past member of the Westerly Recreation Committee, the Westerly Charter Review Committee, the Columbus Day Parade Permanent Parade Committee, the Mount Carmel Feast Committee, Order of Moose, and Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of the Westerly Elks Lodge No. 678, Calabrese Society, and Westerly Bocce Club. He also volunteered for the CT Special Olympics.
John was a loyal and selfless man and there was nothing he wouldn't do for a friend. He was so generous and it always made him happy to buy you a coffee, drink, or pick up the tab. He also had the most wonderful sense of humor and was a great story teller. He always had everybody laughing
John enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Providence College Friars. John had such a keen mind and was known mainly for his knowledge of sports statistics and Westerly history. John loved Westerly and called it "a little piece of heaven". He felt the warmth and friendliness of the people were nothing like any other town.
He loved traveling with his wife Sue and planning the perfect trip. If traveling to a new place he hadn't been to before, he would study the map so he could get around that city like he lived there all his life. A couple of his favorite trips were to San Francisco and Yellowstone National Park.
During the 13 years of John's retirement, he enjoyed coffee with his fellow retirees at Burger King where you would find him most mornings of the week. You could also find him at the Bocce Club on Monday or Thursday nights. He loved being with "the guys."
John loved the Italian traditions, especially Christmas Eve. He always looked forward to the baccala and stuffed peppers, but mostly spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife Sue, he is survived by a son Edward Ferreira of Providence, RI, a daughter Audra Seldon (John) of Montville, CT, a daughter Lauren Urso (Dino) of Westerly, RI, and daughter Kristen Cowell (Matt) of Gilmanton, NH. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Blayne Ferreira, Rashad Pauley, Ashley and Ariana Seldon, John and Kris Dunn, and Matthew John Cowell.
John also leaves behind a nephew John Nardone (Susan), a nephew and Godson Robert Ferreira, Jr., niece Jacinta Nardone, niece and Goddaughter Gina Sutcliffe (Tom), niece, Maria Lennon (Will), and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Eileen (Sacco) Ferreira and sister and brother-in-law Catherine (Ferreira) and Gerard Nardone.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-5pm on Sunday at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St. Westerly. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10am on Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly. There is no procession to church from the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.
