Obituary

Arthur T. Ahern, Jr., of Westerly, RI, beloved husband of Marie (Federico) Ahern, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the age of 87.

Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late Arthur T. Ahern, Sr. and Evelyn (Atherton) Ahern.

Mr. Ahern was a self-employed excavator and the owner of J.W. Keena & Son, Inc. before his retirement. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Air Force, a time he often spoke of fondly. Mr. Ahern was a gentle man, a hard worker, proud of his Irish heritage and of his service to his country. He was a man who often told his family how much he loved his job and how exciting it was to go to work each and every day. He truly loved what he did and was happiest when operating a bulldozer or other piece of earth moving machinery.

Mr. Ahern is survived by his three daughters, Ursula E. Ahern of Westerly, Michele Ahern of North Wales, PA, and Valerie Ahern, also of Westerly. He also leaves a stepson Mark Fitzgerald and wife, Jackie and a step daughter-in-law Kate Fitzgerald, all of Marietta, GA. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Erica (Delaney) Bliven and Benjamin R. Delaney, both of Westerly, Megan and Molly Lehr of North Wales, PA, and Andrew, Benjamin, and Ryan Fitzgerald, all of Marietta, GA. He also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ahern was predeceased by his first wife, Rose (Miceli) Ahern, his brother Richard D. Ahern, grandson Daniel A. Lehr, and stepson, David P. Fitzgerald.

Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Funeral service and burial will be private. Gaffney Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce Street, Westerly, is in charge of the arrangements. For online condolences, please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com.
